This course includes instruction in
Pedorthic Fundamentals, Shoe fitting, Shoe Construction & Modification,
Basic Anatomy, Biomechanics, Pathology, Medical Terminology,
Prefabricated Foot Orthoses & Retail Shoe Business & Management. Classes
meet 8 am to 5 pm, M-F and must be completed before proceeding to Level
2. Final examination is required. |

| Pedorthic Fundamentals | During this module, the student will discuss specifics on required books / CD's and their content. Study requirements for the course are also discussed. The history of pedorthics is explored as well as the trade and certification organizations. Exam specifics and requirements are discussed for both certifying agencies. | Medical Terminology | During this module, the student will define medical terminology as it relates to pedorthics. Cardinal planes, movement and tri-plane motions are defined. General terms used in conjunction with shoes and foot pathologies are defined. PowerPoint Lecture. Lab. Quiz. | |
| Foot and Ankle Anatomy | During this module, the student will learn basic terms as they relate to foot anatomy as well as explore bones, muscles, joints and ligaments in the lower leg, foot and ankle. PowerPoint Lecture. Lab. Quiz. | |
| Biomechanics |
During this module, the student will develop an understanding of basic biomechanics as it relates to foot and leg function, including planes of motion, phases and events of gait, foot joint motions and positions, and ideal foot function. This will include exploration of the Cardinal planes, Motions and positions in the Cardinal planes, phases and events of normal and abnormal gait, gait analysis methods, normal gait, pathological gait and assistive devices. | Common Foot Pathologies | During this module, the student will explore 30 common and not so common foot pathologies in a question and answer format including Definition, Alternate Names, Etiology (Cause), Epidemiology (Incidence), Symptoms and Effects on gait. PowerPoint Lecture. Lab. Quiz. | |
| Shoe Construction / Anatomy |
During this module, the student will develop an understanding of shoe anatomy, shoe construction, shoe component design properties, shoe modification, and effects of modifications. PowerPoint Lecture. Lab. Quiz. |

| Shoe Measurement and Fitting | During this module, the student will develop an understanding of goals and techniques for measuring feet and demonstrate the ability to properly fit shoes. PowerPoint Lecture. Lab. Quiz. | |
| Prefabricated Foot Orthotics |
During this module, the student will learn the proper techniques used in order to fit over-the-counter foot orthoses, including the differences and benefits of ¾-length vs. full-length foot orthotics, differences and benefits among rigid, semi-rigid, accommodative foot orthotics, selection and fitting of appropriate devices and the basics of foot orthoses modifying techniques for better fit and comfort. | Retail Management | During this module, the student will develop an understanding of basic retail shoe and business management.
